About Playing Games In Japanese

Writing in Docs has a strangely heavy feeling to it, like I need to write a certain way or amount, so I'll just put it in here because I only wanted to write a short note on today:

I'm proud of my progress in Japanese immersion; while not literally better at comprehending by some wildly large and measurable amount, I can feel my tolerance for ambiguity grow in bits, which I felt noticeably more today.

I played a mission in Phantasy Star Nova and it was encased in dialogues, tutorials and menu blurbs. I found the cutscene viewer and plot journal too, so I need not worry too much about missing plot relevant parts (not that story is a huge concern to begin with).

Then I played a bit of King's Field 1 (which was mostly incomprehensible) and some of @field, so more tutorials and text dumps.

I understood a fairly large chunk of the dialogue of PS Nova and @field. On a fundamental understanding level, I'd probably say about 60% of all of it, where I didn't quite catch game or genre specific terms, but I got the general idea of what most lines were saying, if not having understood lines enough to isolate and intuit some of the unknowns.

Considering how long I've been lapsed in consistent immersion — not that I'm upset at myself; things happen, or sometimes you just don't feel it — I'm pretty happy with how my extensive immersion "battery" seems to be growing. Very cool!
